Generally, when we think ‘retreat’ we think ‘relaxation’. However, for some of us, that could be considered a little too ‘tame’. If you’re a bit of a thrill seeker, or simply looking to give yourself a challenge, an adventure style retreat could well be for you.

And New Zealand certainly has plenty on offer when it comes to adventure, incredible scenery and plenty of fun.

NZ Adventure Retreats

Considering their name, and the topic of this post, NZ Adventure Retreats had to be featured first. They offer a range of incredible adventures, right across New Zealand.

These include the Women’s Adventure Race Skills Weekend which fast-tracks your skills with the incredible sport of adventure racing. Their Winter Adventure Retreat in Cardrona offers an incredible mix of skiing for the adrenaline junkies, combined with massage, yoga, hot tubs and nourishing food. If you have a group, you can organise a Trail Running Retreat. Or, if you’re travelling in summer, their Find Your Beat Retreat in Glenorchy offers yoga, goal setting workshops, a mountain hike or trail run, a guided mountain biking adventure, and a stand up paddle board instruction and adventure.

Active Downunder

Active Downunder is another company who offer a wide range of retreat style holidays and adventures, right across New Zealand. Far too many in fact, to list here. However, we’ll focus on their Wellness Adventure Retreat. It’s certainly not cheap but it promises a unique experience which includes 6 days at their purpose-built wellness centre.

You’ll enjoy sunrise yoga, sub alpine hiking, mindfulness and meditation, functional strength training, daily massage, contrast spa therapy and all meals with an enzymatically active vegan paleo diet. It’s designed to jump-start your health, is suitable for any fitness level and you’ll be both supported and challenged.

Bay of Islands Health Retreat

Bay of Islands Health Retreat offer a variety of different retreats, but their ‘Active Holidays’ retreat is well-suited to anyone seeking a little adventure, extra fitness and a challenge.

You’ll enjoy a healthy breakfast and lunch, both included, fitness sessions and use of the gym, time to relax in the pool or sauna, and plenty of daily sight-seeing and exploring, with easily accessed coastal and countryside trails.

Plus, if you’d like some guided adventures, at an extra cost they can take you on guided bush hikes, bike rides, sight-seeing and kayaking.

Get active and seek adventure in New Zealand..

These are just three examples of some more adventurous retreat-style holidays. However, there are plenty more, whether you’re into water sports, hiking, skiing, horse riding or something else entirely.

New Zealand offers some truly incredible scenery and destinations, with plenty of adventurous activities, for even the bravest of thrill-seekers.

However even if you’re not a ‘thrill-seeker’, these slightly more adventurous retreats might just give you an insight into parts of New Zealand and what you might really be capable of – than you ever would have discovered otherwise.
