If you’re a bit of a die-hard yoga fan, you’d probably well know that yoga itself originated from India. Which is why we thought we would hunt down some of the best and most authentic yoga retreats that India has to offer.

If you’ve always wanted to learn directly from the most highly-skilled, authentic yoga teachers and masters, you’ll find several of the best opportunities right here.

Yoga Magic Eco-Retreat

Here you have all the ingredients for an authentic and magical yoga retreat, including organic, vegan/vegetarian food to nourish your body, a beautiful setting, luxury ‘eco-lodges’ and of course, plenty of yoga too.

Whether you’re a beginner or wanting to deepen your practice, you’ll enjoy daily meditation, cleansing kriyas, gentle pranayama and ‘vitality boosting yoga asana classes’.

Hinterland Village 6-Day Retreat

Hinterland Village offers a 6-day yoga retreat where the emphasis is on deepening your knowledge and practice of yoga, while integrating it into your daily lifestyle.

You’ll enjoy three vegetarian meals each day, and a consultation with an onsite Ayurvedic/ Naturopathy doctor who will ‘administer treatments according to your bodies constitution’. You’ll also receive massages and steam baths, explore the area with guided nature walks, enjoy a cookery show or two, along with free bicycle rental and a swimming pool.

Purple Valley Yoga

Here you’ll experience the perfect combination of luxury and modern conveniences, with great yoga practice and instruction.

The type of yoga taught here is Ashtanga, and they have strong commitment to supporting the local community. Instead of trying to grow their own food onsite, they instead support and source ingredients from the local farmers, with as much organic produce as possible.

The tropical grounds provide peace and quiet, and when you’re not participating in yoga classes or enjoying a little free time, you can head on over to the treatment centre for a full range of massage, Ayurveda treatments, and beauty therapies.

Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre (Silent Retreat)

For something a little bit different, where you really want to disconnect with the rest of the world, and reconnect with yourself, a Yoga and Meditation Silent Retreat might be the answer.

These retreats are fairly hardcore, and are 12 days in length, with a strict daily schedule and a no-phone, no-talking, no-eye-contact policy. You will have plenty of time for self-reflection, meditation and nature walks though, so if you’re desperate for peace and quiet, this is where you’ll find it.

Choose one of their Ayur (life) programs or you can even choose a healing style retreat, including their 7-day Joint and Muscular Disorder Treatment Program which utilises yoga and traditional therapies to alleviate stress and pain within tissues, joints and muscles.

They also run a Diabetes Management Program and an Eye Program to assist you with eye-related concerns. It’s a unique approach to these types of health issues, but who knows, if you’ve exhausted the Western medical world, it just might help.
