Nothing quite beats the sand, sea and surf if you’re a bit of a ‘water baby’. Particularly in a beautiful location such as New Zealand.
So, today, we’re taking a look at New Zealand’s incredible surfing retreats. We’ve managed to find a range of styles, to suit just about any budget, and any need, whether its straight surf lessons, or a retreat that combines surfing with yoga, relaxation and/or adventure.
Many surf retreats in New Zealand can be found around the Raglan and Whale Bay areas, simply as they’re well known for their incredible beaches and top-notch surf.
Waoku Lodge Luxury Surf Yoga Retreat (Raglan)
If you’re after luxury, yoga and surfing, you’ve found your ideal destination. At Waoku Lodge, you can choose between a 6-night Surf Yoga retreat, or a 6-night Surf, Yoga & Adventure retreat.
The Surf Yoga retreat is perfect for a more relaxed time with daily yoga sessions, three surf lessons and one, one-hour massage. You can then spend the rest of the time relaxing and exploring the local sights.
Alternatively, if you’re craving more adventure, opt for the Surf Yoga & Adventure retreat, which includes all of the above, plus a three-hour horse riding trek along the beach, a kayaking expedition, and a rock climbing adventure.
Whichever you choose, you’ll also stay in a luxury 5-star self-contained apartment, enjoy daily buffet breakfasts, daily lunches, four family-style dinners, one dinner out at a local restaurant, a Kiwi barbeque, airport transfers, local gifts and more.

MojoSurf Raglan Surf Camp (Eco Surf Retreat – Whale Bay)
This one is for the true surf-lovers, whether you’re a beginner or more of a pro. Spend 2 – 5 days learning to surf or fine-tuning your skills with scheduled daily lessons, then spend the rest of your time exploring, walking, paddle boarding or enjoying all the other onsite activities.
It is a little more basic though, as you’ll mostly likely share a dormitory type room. You can however opt for a twin or double room, or you can book a campsite. Meals aren’t included – you will need to self-cater. But there is a fully kitted out kitchen, plus hammocks, pool table, tennis table, TV and WIFI – and a well-equipped local town 15 minutes away.
Perfect if you’ve always wanted to learn to surf, or wish to surf better, with onsite lessons and all surf boards and wetsuits included – while also having a relaxing holiday at the same time.

Surf Dames (Womens Surf Retreats – Whale Bay)
This one’s for the girls only I’m afraid, but if you are a girl who wishes to learn to surf in a supportive, relaxed and ‘luxe’ environment, this is the one for you. Choose between their 1 day/1 night package for a quick treat, or either their 2 day/2 night, or 3 day/2 night packages, both of which include accommodation, private surf classes, fully catered gourmet meals, a full body massage and more.
Alternatively, you can choose their regular 3 day/2 night luxury surf camps, held on various dates. These include private surf classes, surf fitness, all gourmet meals, a full body massage, sunset happy hour (apparently with goodies galore), and a beauty treatment of your choice.

But if you’re travelling alone, and seeking a longer stay, never fear, you have options. Their ‘Learn To Surf’ package is perfect for beginners, and includes 3 nights accommodation, 2 beginner surf lessons, plus breakfast. Or, if you’ve already gotten a good handle on the waves, choose the ‘Intensive Surf’ package, with either 3 or 6 nights accommodation, 4 surf lessons (to advance your skills) and breakfast.
Our top pick though – is their ‘Surf N Yoga’ package. This includes 6 nights accommodation, 5 surf lessons, 5 yoga sessions plus breakfast.
